As the weeks passed and they made their way into Wyoming, Charlie grew into more and more of a proper cat with every day. She paced along Cyndricka’s shoulders and over the top of her backpack, gripping in her claws when she needed extra balance but steady for the most part. They didn’t know exactly how old she had been when she became trapped in that storm drain, but it soon seemed likely that she had spent the majority of her life on the road with them She certainly behaved like it, growing more confident in being at least a few steps away from Cyndricka as they walked, or playing in the bushes and long grass when they made camp for the night.

Cyndricka was also changing. Or to be more specific, she had been changing since they set off, and it was becoming obvious now. Her miming routine had kept her athletic when she lived in New York, a layer of fat covering long, lean muscles, but the long days of walking with only minimal breaks had made her hard. The curves were fading off of her face, no matter how much food she managed to get or how cheap the food in question was. Sharp lines were growing in her face and body.

It was only Carmen and Chelsea who remained the same as they walked and spring turned unapologetically into a hot, dry summer, with Carmen looking at home in her breezy summer dress and sandals and Chelsea looking like a madwoman in a winter coat.

They were traveling through a dusty stretch of Wyoming highway, Charlie scampering in the reddish gravel and dirt while Cyndricka counted handfuls of change from her pockets. The mime shows had continued to have admirable returns, with the presence of Charlie to draw the attention of adults and children alike. Chelsea had taken to trying to teach Charlie tricks while Cyndricka took breaks or dozed through the worst heat of the day. Chelsea was hampered by only knowing how to deal with dogs, and the lack of treats to reward the cat with, but Charlie seemed to have a decent grasp on “sit,” and they were making progress on “stay.” Not a lot of progress; there were too many interesting bugs around for a young cat to be content staying in one place for any length of time.

Chelsea was working on just such a training session, while Cyndricka drank water and sat cross-legged in the dirt, signing back and forth with Carmen about what towns they were planning on going through next. They could no longer walk during the middle of the day because of the sun, and soon enough they would have to switch over to a nocturnal schedule. They had been at rest for a few minutes when the sound of a car started to approach from the distance. Chelsea stood up, apparently an invitation for Charlie to jump through her feet and start chewing on a tuft of grass, and looked out at the dust cloud coming down the highway towards them.
